米里

石油给米里带来迅速的发展和进步。1912年政府宣布米里成为砂拉越第四省的行政中心。城市的发展吸引外地人移居米里。到了1930年代，米里已经成为砂拉越的重要市镇。大量石油公司的外国职员涌入也形成了米里社会独特的西方文化。

米里油田在二战前，是砂拉越的的重要经济来源。然而，石油的重要性也为米里到来了灾难。二战期间，米里曾因石油而遭受到两次严重的破坏。1941年12月，日军登陆米里前夕，油田公司在驻守该地的旁遮普军团协助下，封闭油井，焚烧油田，使米里陷入火海，居民大惊，纷纷逃往他处。1945年，日军在太平洋全面溃退，四月间，米里的日军开始撤往峇南上游，临走之前，他们还纵火焚烧油田，使米里再度陷入火海。米里市区遭到联军轰炸，成为一片废墟。战后，米里才从废墟中重建起来。
